About 5,000 free day-old chicks were distributed to schools, poultry stakeholders, members of the general public, and the media during the 5th Ghana Poultry Day, held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra. The initiative aims to encourage backyard poultry farming and boost public interest in the consumption and production of locally raised poultry.
organized by Agrihouse Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Ghana Tourism Authority. Held under the theme, “Investing in the Local Poultry Sector: A Means to Creating Jobs, Promoting Agritourism and Improving Food Security,” the event brought together farmers, agribusinesses, policymakers, students, and members of the public to explore strategies for revitalizing Ghana’s poultry industry and strengthening national food systems.
Speaking during the distribution exercise, Executive Director of Agrihouse Foundation, Alberta Nana Akyaa Akosa, highlighted the motivation behind the initiative and its broader impact.
“We believe that creating direct access to quality poultry inputs like day-old chicks is a practical way to empower Ghanaians, especially students, women, and beginner farmers. These chicks when reared well can become a seed of opportunity, self-reliance, and sustainability,” she said.
She explained that the distribution aligns with Agrihouse Foundation’s mission to promote agribusiness education, improve food security at the community level, and reduce Ghana’s reliance on imported poultry products.
“We want to spark interest, particularly among the youth, and show them that poultry farming is not only viable but profitable. These small starts can lead to big transformations,” she added.
Ms. Akosa also urged recipients to take proper care of the chicks and adopt best practices to ensure healthy growth and sustainable impact within their households and communities.
Moses Aidoo, General Manager of Kuipers Breeders Ghana, also shared the company’s motivation for supporting the initiative.
“Our decision to partner with Agrihouse Foundation for the 5th Ghana Poultry Day aligns with our vision of building a more robust and self-sufficient poultry industry,” he said.
“We understand that access to quality day-old chicks can make a huge difference, especially for young and small-scale farmers. This is our way of giving back and investing in the future of the poultry sector.”
He further emphasized that Kuipers Breeders Ghana remains committed to supporting initiatives like Ghana Poultry Day that seeks to strengthen the local poultry value chain and promote awareness about the nutritional and economic benefits of consuming locally produced poultry.
