For the first time in more than a year, the World Food Programme (WFP) has delivered food aid to Wad Madani, a conflict-affected city in Sudan’s Gezira State, aiming to prevent a worsening famine. On January 20, WFP trucks brought 260 metric tons of nutritional foods and staples, including cereals, oil, and pulses, enough to feed 30,000 people for a month.
“This is a critical step in addressing extreme hunger among the most vulnerable,” said Alex Marianelli, WFP Sudan Acting Country Director, noting that pockets of severe malnutrition are already evident in the area.
WFP lost access to Wad Madani in late 2023, but a recent shift in the conflict’s front lines allowed the resumption of life-saving aid. Additional convoys carrying food, health, and hygiene supplies from WFP, UNICEF, and other partners are expected to arrive soon, despite ongoing challenges.
This delivery is part of broader breakthroughs by WFP to reach isolated conflict zones in Sudan. For the first time, WFP recently transported 1,000 metric tons of food by river from South Sudan to Kosti, marking a significant milestone in delivering humanitarian aid.
