Farmers in Ada have commended District Agric Extension Officers for their constant efforts in sensitizing them and putting in place diverse protocols and preventive measures to substantially reduce post-harvest losses.
Some of the measures they recalled, includes trading at the farm gate which enables growers to buy farm produces directly from their source without the intervention of distributors or middlemen.
On this note, the former Ada East Best Onion Farmer, Mr. George Otumfuor, has also advised the youth to venture into agric-based activities as the yields were far better than sitting idle in the house for white collar jobs.
According to Mr Otumfuor, chilli pepper grows in about 10 weeks for harvesting, with carrots, 13 weeks, okra- 8 weeks and maize, 11 weeks.
He, however, said the mini sack of chilli pepper sold was at Ghc. 300.00 taking notes that this year’s sales were good and more customers from parts of Accra were engaged.
The Former Best District Farmer, Mr. Akortia Emmanuel, a cultivator of watermelon, green pepper and cucumber mentioned that they were able to cultivate all year round due to the availability of an irrigation facility in the area.
The Farmers have appealed to the government to invest more in the agriculture sector to improve food security in the country.
