Smallholder farmers in the Tamale North constituency have experienced a significant boost in their rice production this season, thanks to the combined efforts of 24 Group Limited, a Tamale-based agro-organization, and Alhassan Saibu Suhuyini, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamale North. Their collaboration has not only provided vital agricultural support but also contributed to enhancing food security and promoting sustainable farming practices in the region.
Empowering Farmers for Success
The initiative, aimed at bolstering agricultural productivity, offered farmers essential resources such as fertilizers, pesticides, and financial assistance for ploughing. In addition, farmers were trained in modern agronomic practices, including proper seed selection, chemical application, and best practices to maximize their harvests. Over 250 acres of rice were cultivated under this scheme, with projected yields of 30 to 35 bags per acre, marking a notable increase in output.
Ready Market for Farmers’ Produce
A key aspect of the initiative was ensuring that farmers had a market for their produce. The MP, Alhassan Saibu Suhuyini, has committed to purchasing the harvested rice, guaranteeing a steady income for farmers and helping to stabilize their livelihoods. This market linkage is crucial in giving farmers the assurance that their hard work will not go to waste.
Addressing Challenges and Building Resilience
Mahama Mohammed, Executive Director of 24 Group Ltd., emphasized the importance of supporting smallholder farmers, especially in light of rising input costs that have previously hindered agricultural productivity. He noted, “We are committed to providing farmers with the knowledge and resources they need to thrive and contribute to our nation’s economic growth.” His comments underscore the organization’s dedication to tackling the challenges that farmers face, from fluctuating input prices to climate change impacts.
The initiative also focused on educating farmers about soil health, with a particular emphasis on the role of fertilizers in improving soil quality and reducing post-harvest losses. Farmers were encouraged to adopt certified seeds and seek expert guidance to optimize their yields.
Real Impact on Farmers’ Lives
The partnership between 24 Group Ltd. and the MP has brought tangible benefits to local farmers, who have expressed their gratitude for the support they received. One farmer remarked, “This training has equipped us with the tools we need to grow enough food to feed our families and generate income. It has revitalized our farming businesses.”
Baba Tahiru, the MP’s Communication Officer, highlighted the MP’s ongoing commitment to smallholder farmers, noting that the provision of inputs, chemicals, and capacity-building initiatives have been pivotal in driving sustainable agricultural practices. “We recognize that farmers are the backbone of the economy, and we will continue supporting them to improve their productivity and livelihoods,” he said. He also called on philanthropists and other organizations to extend their support to smallholder farmers in Northern Ghana, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to secure the region’s agricultural future.
Testimonials from Beneficiaries
Farmers like Abu Zakaria from Gblima shared how the initiative had helped them overcome challenges related to climate change and the rising costs of agricultural inputs. “This support has come at the perfect time,” he said, expressing hope for the future of his farming endeavors.
Kulaha-Amadu Alhassan, another beneficiary who grows rice, soybeans, and maize, echoed similar sentiments. He explained that the escalating costs of farm inputs had made farming less profitable, pushing many farmers to abandon their fields. “Thanks to this initiative, we now have the tools and knowledge to continue farming and improve our livelihoods,” he said.
Strengthening Agricultural Resilience in Northern Ghana
The successful collaboration between 24 Group Ltd. and the Tamale North MP has proven essential in boosting agricultural productivity, strengthening the resilience of smallholder farmers, and contributing to the overall economic growth of Northern Ghana. By providing targeted support and ensuring access to markets, this initiative highlights the transformative potential of strategic partnerships in addressing the challenges faced by smallholder farmers and ensuring food security for the future.
