The Energy Minister, John Abdulai Jinapor, has conducted an inspection tour of the Tema Harbour to assess the situation involving approximately 2,500 containers procured by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) that remain uncleared at the port.
This visit underscores the Minister’s commitment to resolving inefficiencies within the energy sector and ensuring the judicious use of national resources.
The uncleared containers, which hold essential materials purchased during the previous administration, have accrued alarming demurrage charges totaling GHS 1.5 billion. This development exposes serious lapses in resource management and inter-agency coordination, creating a substantial financial burden on the nation.
Minister Jinapor expressed grave concern over the issue, describing it as unacceptable. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s resolve to enhance operational efficiency and accountability, emphasizing the urgency of clearing the containers to prevent further financial losses and to support critical energy initiatives that will benefit Ghanaians.
The Minister also assured the public that proactive measures would be implemented to prevent such occurrences in the future, stressing the importance of effective public resource management in advancing the country’s developmental goals.
