Market women in the Oti Region have called for the youth to embrace agriculture, pointing out how the lack of interest in the sector is making it difficult for them to source food items locally. They have noted that neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso and Togo have youth who are engaged in agriculture and are benefiting from it economically.
The market women have urged the government to take action to encourage the youth to take up agriculture. They believe that the government should create policies that incentivize young people to pursue careers in agriculture, as this would lead to personal development for the youth and contribute to the growth and sustainability of the country’s agricultural sector.
Frimpong Monica, a trader in the Dambai market, has shared her thoughts on the matter, stating that the government should play a major role in making the youth fall in love with agriculture. She believes that agriculture could be the solution to eradicating poverty in Ghana, as many countries that depend solely on agriculture are thriving.
Monica’s sentiments have been echoed by other traders in the Oti Region, who have pointed out how difficult it is to source food items locally due to the lack of interest in agriculture among the youth. They have noted that food items imported from neighbouring countries are often cheaper and of better quality.
The market women are calling on the government to prioritize investment in agriculture and provide the necessary support to young people who are interested in the sector. They believe that this would not only lead to a more prosperous Ghana, but it would also create employment opportunities for the youth.
