Ahead of the contractual deal signed between Rockland Farms and La Bianca Company Ltd to promote locally produced broilers on a larger scale in Ghana, the two parties have officially launched the ‘Akoko Tasty’ Chicken Sampling and Tasting Event on Monday, 30th January 2023.
The activation, according to the Chief Executive Officer of Rockland farms, Ms Edith Wheatland was poised at creating jobs for the youth and promoting the spike in consumption of local chicken on the Ghanaian Market.
Hon. Turfero Mohammed, the Member of Parliament for Nanton Constituency and Deputy Minister-in charge of Livestock at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, at the event, admonished Ghanaian frozen foods importers to develop receptive doors of partnership for smallholder poultry farmers who produce local chicken on daily basis.
Amongst salient personalities who graced the event included the President of the Ghana Poultry Association, Mr. Victor Oppong Adjei who believes the collaboration made by the duo can be recorded on the scorecards of the poultry industry as La Bianca Company now veers into local chicken consumption.
Mr. Oppong shared that the initiative taken by Edith Wheatland to venture into poultry production cannot be underestimated as he encouraged more women to consider the male-dominated poultry industry. Some challenges that came up in the conversation of the large patronage of local broilers included higher interest rates of broiler sales and poultry feed. This had Hon. Eunice Jacqueline Asumaah-Hinneh bemoaning for a reduction of interest rates on poultry feed for poultry farmers. She however commended Ms Edith Wheatland for taking up the bold initiative of Rockland Farms.
Most Ghanaian vendors and customers of La Bianca Frozen foods at the tables of ‘Akoko Tasty’s grilled local chicken had mouth-watering tastes and shared with Agriwatch, their thoughts. While they attested to loving the taste of it, they also pleaded for a subsidy so Ghanaians can be able to patronize homemade broilers.
