– Experts Settle the Debate.
Celery has long been a staple in kitchens worldwide, praised for its crisp texture and versatility. But a surprising question has emerged: Is celery a vegetable or a fruit?
While it may seem like an open-and -shut case, the answer depends on how you define these classifications.
From the botanical standpoint, fruits are defined as the mature ovary of a flowering plant, usually containing seeds. Celery, however, does not provide edible seeds bearing structure, meaning it does not qualify as a fruit. Instead, it is classified as a vegetable, specifically a stem vegetable, because we eat its stalks.
In contrast, the culinary perspective often categorises produce based on the taste and usage. Since celery is not sweet and is commonly used in savory dishes like soups and salads, it firmly fits the definition of a vegetable in the culinary world.
Why the confusion?
The debates stem from the way some plants have unconventional classifications. For instance, tomatoes and cucumbers are botanically fruits but treated as vegetables in cooking. However, celery does not share this dual identity – it is universally regarded as a vegetable both scientifically and in the kitchen.
Experts agree: Celery is a vegetable, not a fruit. It remains an essential ingredient in everything from diet-friendly snacks to classic dishes like stuffing and mirepoix. So, while some debates may leave room for doubt, it is a vegetable.
