The Anloga District Assembly has officially commenced the distribution of poultry birds under the government’s flagship “Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti” programme.
The programme is a nationwide household poultry initiative aimed at boosting local production, enhancing food security, and improving livelihoods across rural communities.
The distribution exercise began on Monday, June 1, 2026, with a ceremonial handover held at the forecourt of the District Assembly. Five selected beneficiaries received poultry birds to formally launch the rollout process, marking the beginning of a wider distribution exercise expected to reach hundreds of households across the district.
The programme is being implemented under the government’s broader Feed Ghana initiative, which seeks to reduce the country’s dependence on imported frozen chicken while strengthening domestic poultry production and creating employment opportunities, particularly at the household level.
Following the ceremonial launch, a mass distribution is expected to continue in the coming days at the District Department of Agriculture office in Woe. At the facility, registered households and individual beneficiaries will receive 200-day-old chicks per batch, along with the necessary guidance to support backyard poultry farming.
According to Mr Franklin Agbove, the Anloga District Agric Officer, a total of 792 households and individuals have successfully registered for the programme across the district. He assured that all registered beneficiaries will receive their allocated share of the birds, emphasising fairness and inclusivity in the distribution process.
“The core objective of the initiative is to empower households to engage in small-scale poultry production, thereby improving household income levels and strengthening food security within communities,” Mr Agbove said
He further disclosed that the district received approximately 10,000 birds for distribution. However, due to natural losses during transportation and handling, about 9,000 birds remain viable and are currently being distributed to beneficiaries across all communities in the Anloga District.
He also urged beneficiaries to adhere strictly to proper poultry management practices to ensure the survival and productivity of the birds, stressing that effective care is essential to achieving the long-term goals of the programme.
The exercise was witnessed by key political and traditional stakeholders, including the Member of Parliament for Anlo Constituency, Richard Kwame Sefe, and the NDC Constituency Chairman, Mr Rolex Miheso, Madam Sandra Kpedor, the DCE, Togbi Hatsu II of Dzita, and Mr Emmanuel Dzakpasu, the District Coordinating Director.
They all expressed support for the initiative and its potential impact on local livelihoods and also called on the beneficiaries to make good use of the birds to realise the aim of the project as intended by the President
The “Nkokɔ Nkitinkiti” initiative is a government-led household and backyard poultry programme designed to scale up domestic poultry production across Ghana. Under the initiative, over 55,000 households nationwide are expected to receive up to 50 chicks each, alongside feed and basic veterinary support to establish sustainable backyard poultry farms.
The programme is widely viewed as a strategic intervention to strengthen food security, reduce poultry imports, and stimulate rural economic development through agribusiness participation.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr Fiagbe Bright, expressed gratitude for the initiative and pledged to make effective use of the support to improve his livelihood. He noted that the programme has the potential to transform household incomes and create indirect employment opportunities within communities.
“This project will change a lot of livelihoods in our community. If it starts well and I expand, I will employ people to help me, and in doing so, I will also contribute to reducing unemployment in our community,” he stated.
As distribution continues across the district, expectations remain high that the programme will catalyse rural enterprise development and long-term economic resilience in the Anloga District.
