The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Hon. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to resetting Ghana’s mining sector, emphasizing that addressing illegal mining, or galamsey, remains a top priority.
Speaking at a durbar in Sekondi-Takoradi, the minister acknowledged the expectations placed on the government by traditional leaders and local communities. He stressed that his visit was aimed at securing their support and endorsement as the Mahama administration embarks on Operation Heal Ghana—a nationwide campaign to combat illegal mining and restore environmental integrity.
Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Ellembelle, highlighted the Western Region’s critical role as the hub of Ghana’s natural resource exploitation. He underscored the necessity of working closely with traditional authorities to reform the sector, ensuring sustainable and responsible mining practices.
“I stand before you today to express my gratitude to our esteemed chiefs, queen mothers, and the people of the Western Region for your unwavering support during the December 7, 2024 elections and my subsequent vetting process,” he said.
He further urged traditional leaders to present a united front in safeguarding the region’s rich resources, noting that their leadership is crucial in the fight against illegal mining.
“To be frank, the battle against galamsey must be championed by our chiefs and traditional authorities in every part of the country. Your unity is not just a strength but a necessity in protecting the legacy of this land for future generations,” the minister emphasized.
Nana Kobina Nketsia V, the Paramount Chief of the Essikado (British Sekondi) Traditional Area, commended Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah for engaging traditional rulers in discussions on the government’s strategies to combat illegal mining.
During an open forum, some chiefs raised concerns regarding land administration, mining regulations, and other pressing challenges affecting their communities. They called on the minister to ensure that the Operation Recover All Loot committee extends its work to address land-related issues in the region. Expressing their readiness to support his initiatives, they noted that his success would be a significant victory for the Western Region.
In response, Hon. Armah-Kofi Buah assured the chiefs of his commitment to addressing their concerns and maintaining regular engagements to keep them informed on government policies and interventions within the sector.
