The Ministry of Lands and Natural resources has released a press statement to direct the forestry commission on halting activities from the Akonta Mining Limited’s operation in the Nimri Tano Forest reserve at Amenfi West Municipality, Western Region.
In the communique issued on September 30, 2022, the Ministry outlined the ongoing activities in the Nimri forest reserve as illegal, stating that the Wontumi-owned mining company only has a ‘lease’ to carry out its operations in some parts of Samreboi , However, ‘the company has no mineral right to undertake any mining operations in the Tano Nimeiri forest reserve’.
Reviewing some records dated August 25, 2022, The Ministry stated that the mining company applied for a Mining Lease to undertake mining operations in the said Forest reserve, but its application has not been ‘determined’ to ‘proceed with its operations’.
The Forestry Commission, then, was instructed by the lands minister, Hon. Samuel Jinapor to ensure that the company does not carry out any activity in the forest reserve and take punitive actions against any culprit on that note.
“The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources remains committed to the fight against illegal mining, with integrity and transparency, and assures the general public that it will continue to work with the relevant agencies and all stakeholders to come to grips with this age-old galamsey menace,” the statement added.
