The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has taken delivery of 950,000 barrels of crude oil from Ghana’s Sankofa-Gye Nyame field, marking the refinery’s first processing of crude from the offshore field.
The crude was supplied through the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) and transported by Sonangol Cazenga as part of a collaboration aimed at directing more locally produced crude towards domestic refining.
TOR is expected to process the shipment into petroleum products for the Ghanaian market, supporting efforts to increase domestic refining and reduce reliance on imported refined petroleum products.
The Sankofa-Gye Nyame field typically supplies crude in cargoes of about 950,000 barrels. The latest delivery therefore represents a significant addition to TOR’s feedstock as the refinery works to sustain crude processing operations.
According to TOR, the shipment demonstrates the potential for closer cooperation between Ghana’s upstream and downstream petroleum sectors, particularly through the use of locally produced crude to support domestic refining.
The refinery’s Managing Director said the arrangement with GNPC creates an opportunity to strengthen TOR’s operations while retaining a greater share of the value generated from Ghana’s petroleum resources within the country.
The delivery comes as TOR continues its efforts to restore and maintain operations following extensive turnaround maintenance. President John Dramani Mahama, in his 2026 State of the Nation Address, said the refinery had resumed crude processing for the first time since 2018.
TOR said the collaboration with GNPC also aligns with efforts to improve integration across Ghana’s upstream, midstream and downstream petroleum value chain.
The two institutions are expected to explore additional areas of cooperation as part of efforts to strengthen the domestic petroleum industry.
The TOR Managing Director expressed appreciation to President Mahama and Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor for their support, while also acknowledging the management of GNPC and the refinery’s tolling partners, Fujairah and Triangle Commodities Trading, for their cooperation.
