farmers in Anomawobi and adjoining communities in the Bosome Freho District of the Ashanti Region struggle to cart their produce to the market due to the deplorable nature of the area’s road network.
The Anomawobi-Obuasi junction to market centers in the Ashanti Region is not in good shape and the Anomawobi-Nsuta-New Edubiase route to find alternative market in the Central Region is also very deplorable. Similarly, the road which connects to the Eastern Region is bad.
The situation gets worse during the rainy season as vehicles conveying their produce get stuck for several days causing the farmers who produce palm fruits, cocoa, rice and other staples in large quantities to lose significant quantities of their produce.
Joe Ackom, a cereals farmer, told 3news.com that, “due to the poor nature of our road we are mostly forced to keep our produce for over three months. Weevils sometimes infest our produce leading to losses” and passionately “appealed to the government to come to our aid and construct the road”.
In several instances, truckers spend several days trying to pull stuck vehicles.
“All the roads in this area are not traversable. This route is the most reliable, but it is also not in a good shape. We mostly get stuck. Sometimes we are left with no option but to offload and reload the goods.
We sometimes spend three nights here in the bush”- Seidu, a trucker whose vehicle had stuck on the road said to 3News.com.
Safohene of Anomawobi, Yaw Tetteh who is also a farmer expressed worry about the situation citing also the difficulty for farmers to seek emergency healthcare due to the poor road system.
“Apart from we not being able to send our goods to the market, pregnant women and the sick struggle to access emergency healthcare. The woman whose funeral we held just yesterday [referring to Margaret Magotey, a 53year old woman] died because we could not send her to the hospital early when she fell ill.
He wants government to pay an immediate attention and give the area’s road network a facelift.
