AGRA and MoFA Introduce Fertiliser Blending Guidelines to Boost Agricultural Productivity in Ghana

AGRA, in partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) through the Plant Protection and Regulatory Services Directorate (PPRSD), and with the backing of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has officially introduced Ghana’s Inorganic Bulk Blending Fertiliser Guidelines.

These guidelines, presented on June 2nd, 2022, alongside the organic fertiliser guidelines, mark a significant milestone in MoFA’s efforts to revolutionize the country’s agricultural sector.

This initiative lays the groundwork for delivering customised fertiliser products tailored to the unique soil fertility and crop requirements of Ghanaian farmers. By ensuring the provision of high-quality fertilisers to smallholder farmers, the guidelines aim to empower them to achieve increased yields, thereby contributing to the development of more resilient food systems across Ghana.

Betty Annan, AGRA’s Country Director for Ghana, emphasized the organization’s commitment to driving inclusive agricultural transformation in Africa, targeting 30 million farming households across 11 focus countries, including Ghana. Annan highlighted the importance of innovative approaches to boost fertiliser usage, citing the guidelines as a critical step towards this goal. By tailoring fertiliser blends to suit specific soil conditions, farmers can enhance their productivity, paving the way for a more food-secure future in Ghana.

While Ghana’s Planting for Food and Jobs Programme has been distributing blended fertilisers since 2019, the absence of established standards for blending raw materials posed challenges. Despite conducting tests on finished products before distribution, the PPRSD encountered difficulties due to a lack of regular operating procedures. AGRA, in collaboration with the International Fertiliser Development Centre (IFDC) through the Enhancing Growth through Regional Agricultural Input Systems (EnGRAIS) project, provided essential expertise and assistance in customizing the fertiliser blending guidelines to address Ghana’s specific agricultural needs and challenges.
