The Minister of Food and Agriculture, Hon. Eric Opoku has paid a historic working visit to the Ashaiman Tulaku Livestock Market in the Greater Accra Region, where he donated Ghc30,000, a large-size tricycle and streetlights in support of enhancing the state of the market.
The Minister with his team visited the renowned largest west African livestock market on February 2, 2026 to hold a discussion with the leadership of the market on improving its current state.
Speaking at the meeting, Hon. Eric Opoku underscored the importance of the market as it serves mainly as a source of employment, income generation, animal protein supply, healthy meat processing and general food security with many other benefits that reinforce the need and necessity for its support and upliftment.
The Ghc30,000 amount was specifically given to help secure payloader services to clear accumulated waste at the market to ensure clean and safe environment. The Minister pledged that the government would later procure a dedicated payloader for the market.
“The sanity aspect of the market is very important and with this, we donate Ghc30000 to you to secure payloader services to clean the place and make it better for us all.”
The Ministry also donated a large-sized tricycle to the leadership of the market to help in proper disposal of waste, and ensure that the market is safe and conducive.

Aside the aforementioned, the Minister also donated fifty (50) streetlights bulbs to the market to enhance the lighting system and visibility and thereby promote the activities at the market during the nights.
“We all know that this market day and night and requires that lights are in place to see business activities move on both day and night. As it is a concern, we are donating 50 streetlights to be fixed across the market to compliment those already provided by the MCE to ensure a 24-hour operation”
According to him, livestock remains a crucial aspect of the agricultural sector with enormous benefits to the country, and that, the Ministry is committed to working with the leadership of the market going forward.

He emphasized that the Mahama-led government is committed to elevating the state of the market into an ultra modern one as promised during his campaign, and plans are underway to commence work shortly.
“President Mahama is determined to keep to his words about improving this market and transform it into an ultra modern one as he promised you, and very soon the official plan will be here with plans underway.”
The Ashaiman Tulaku Livestock Breeders and Traders Association that serve as a union and leadership overseeing the operations of the market, through their secretary, Sheikh Issah Amartey thanked the Minister and his team at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture on their support in improving the state of the market.

He emphasized that the association remains appreciative to Hon. Eric Opoku for being the first sector Minister to officially pay a visit to the market to give them a listening ear and a helping hand since its establishment in the 1960s, describing the visit as “historic.”
The Tulaku Ashaiman Livestock Market serves as the largest livestock hub in West Africa receiving animals across the country, as well as neighbouring countries from Nigeria, Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso and others with 24-hour operation.
