The Anbariya Sunni Muslim community and the Tamale Central Mosque Muslim community have each received 200 bags of fertilizer to support their farming activities for improved productivity.
The fertilizer, donated by Mr Eric Opoku, Minister for Food and Agriculture, will be distributed amongst members of the two Muslim communities, who are into farming to enhance crop production and contribute to food security in the country.
Mr Abubakari Abdul Mumin, Managing Director, Buipe PBC Shea Factory, who handed over the bags of fertilizer to the leaders of the two Muslim communities in Tamale, said they were a personal donation from the Minister for Food and Agriculture.
Mr Mumin said the gesture formed part of the Minister’s commitment to supporting farmers especially those in the northern part of the country to increase food production and improve their livelihoods.
He said the gesture would also complement the government’s efforts to strengthen agriculture, improve food security and create sustainable livelihoods for farming households across the Northern Region.
He was hopeful that the support would reduce the burden on beneficiaries and encourage them to cultivate more acres of farmland.
Access to fertilizer remains one of the major challenges confronting many farmers due to the high cost of agricultural inputs.
Mr Mumin urged the beneficiaries to use the fertilizer for its intended purpose to maximise yields during the current farming season.
He touched on the Minister’s support to farmers in other parts of the country saying “This is not the first time. He has already given some fertilizers to some of the districts and will replicate it across the country to ensure that farmers get enough fertilizer to apply to their crops.”
Shiek Abdul Salam Ahmed, Northern Regional Chief Imam, who was represented by Alhaji Saibu Abarika to receive the fertilizer, expressed gratitude to the Minister for the gesture and said the fertilizer had come at the right time.
He said the donation was a major boost for many farmers, who had struggled to purchase farm fertilizer and assured them that the fertilizer would be distributed fairly to deserving beneficiaries.
