Dr Shermal Perara, the Chairman, Incorporated Society of Planters (ISP) Africa Chapter, has emphasised the importance of sustainable agriculture in ensuring food security in Africa.
“Sustainable agriculture is the key to providing food security for the African population,” the Chairman said on Monday at the Media launch ahead of the inaugural First Year Anniversary Symposium and Initial Technical Training of ISP Africa’s African Regional Chapter in Accra.
The event, scheduled to take place in Accra, Ghana, for Thursday, May 22 to Friday, May 23 will attract delegates from around the world, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Europe, United States of America, and countries on the African continent.
Themed: “AgriUnity: Empowering Sustainable Agriculture in Africa” aims to empower sustainable agriculture in Africa by providing smallholders with the knowledge and expertise they need to improve their yields and livelihoods.
Dr Perara highlighted the significance of developing a significant land bank to support commercial agriculture plantations while protecting the environment and wildlife.
He said: “We are focusing on developing a significant land bank to support commercial agriculture plantations, while protecting the environment and wildlife.”
Dr Fatai Afolabi, Vice Chairman, ISPA, called for a developing capacity towards agricultural with experts and professionalism in Africa.
“Africa is the base for enormous systems with capacity. We in agriculture should take it as a practice.
“Planting is critical to agricultural as what you plant is what you will reap,” he said.
Mr Afolabi explained that bringing the symposium to Africa will help ISP achieve its goals of adding value to agricultural production and food security on the continent.
Mr Chris Foli, Chairman, ISP Africa, Ghana Chapter noted that producing affordable processed food through training and commercial agricultural was about time.
The launch also saw the unveiling of Mr Chris Foli as the Chairman of the Ghana Chapter of ISP Africa.
Incorporated on October 8, 1919, the ISP had over 6,000 members locally and overseas.
