The Ghana Chamber of Mines has appointed Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah as Acting Chief Executive Officer, following the retirement of Dr. Sulemanu Koney who served as CEO for nearly a decade
Mr. Nantogmah, who has been the Chamber’s Director of External Relations and Communications, will assume the role in an interim capacity while the organisation searches for a permanent replacement.
He brings more than 26 years of experience in the mining sector, with a background spanning communications, environmental management, sustainability, marketing, public relations, government affair and stakeholder engagement.
In a statement, the Chamber expressed confidence in his leadership during the transition.
“We express our sincere appreciation to Ahmed for his long-standing service to the Chamber and for accepting this leadership role at the Secretariat,” said Mr. Michael Edem Akafia, President-Ghana Chamber of Mines.
“His wealth of experience and profound industry knowledge will be invaluable as we continue to enhance the mining industry’s role as a vital pillar of Ghana’s economy.”
The Chamber reaffirmed its commitment to responsible mining and supporting national economic growth through a vibrant and accountable minerals sector.
Mr. Nantogmah steps in as Dr. Koney steps down after more than two decades of service to the Chamber, including ten years at the helm as CEO.
Dr. Koney, who assumed leadership of the Chamber in 2014, reached the statutory retirement age in April 2024 but remained in office until March 2025 upon request by the Chamber’s Council.
His tenure was widely regarded as transformative, marked by strategic leadership and key policy advocacy that shaped the future of Ghana’s mining landscape.
Having joined the Chamber in 2000 as Director of Analysis, Research and Finance, Dr. Koney rose through the ranks – eventually steering the organisation through a period of reform and increased engagement with both government and industry players.
He was instrumental in leading conversations around responsible mining, fiscal reforms, local content policy and environmental stewardship, issues that remain central to the sustainability and competitiveness of Ghana’s mining sector.
“Dr. Koney’s remarkable service and commitment to the Chamber and mining industry have been truly inspiring,” said Mr. Akafia.
“His leadership has left an indelible mark on the industry and we are immensely grateful for his contributions.”
The Chamber’s president further extended heartfelt appreciation on behalf of the Executive Committee and Council, saying: “His impact has been extraordinary and we wish him the very best in his future endeavours”.
