Some agric extension officers who participated in the pre-training sessions held by Agrihouse Foundation in selected districts of the Northern region, ahead of it ‘1household,1garden’ project have described the initiative as innovative and sustainable.
The much-anticipated project, which is jointly supported by USAID – US Agency for International Development and the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa is aimed at promoting and contributing to household food and nutrition security in the northern region, through backyard gardening.
In a joint press statement, the three organizations have said, “the project’s greatest impact will be to directly contribute to the region’s food and nutrition security, through increased vegetable crop productivity, and increase the incomes of smallholder farmers and households by enhancing their capacity and agricultural systems.
Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, Community extension officer of Mion Kpa-kpo-re, Abdulai Alhassan, said he is looking forward to the project empowering the beneficiaries, largely single mothers, women with physical disabilities, widows and teenage girls, with the needed knowledge in vegetable production.
“Farming is our livelihood and I think if we concentrate on the vegetable production, it will help the women to add to their income generation. I am hoping this project will be sustained so that every member of the community will experience the full impact of the upcoming project,” he said in an interview.

About the project
The project is expected to fully commence in the next 13 days for 600 selected beneficiaries in Mion, Gushegu, Nanton, Yendi, Karaga and Sagnerigu.
The 1h1g project will be training and supporting a total of 2000households, within 17districts in Northern, North East, Upper East and West Regions. Each beneficiary will be provided with garden tools, 7sqm fencing mesh, 10kg compost, a bottle of neem pesticides, 220 seedlings of 11 different vegetables +packs of seeds
