Fisheries Minister Reaffirms Government’s Commitment to Revive Aquaculture in South Tongu

The Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development,Hon. Emelia Arthur, has reiterated the government’s dedication to revitalizing aquaculture businesses affected by recent challenges, following a working visit to selected fish farms in the South Tongu District. The visit aimed to assess the impact of operational setbacks on fish farmers and engage stakeholders on measures to strengthen the sector and restore livelihoods.

Accompanied by Victoria Dzeklo, the District Chief Executive, and Mr. Maxwell Kwame Lukutor, Member of Parliament for South Tongu, the Minister toured Fish and Feed Don Gazy Farms and Flossel Farms, where she interacted directly with operators and staff.

During the engagements, farmers highlighted several challenges facing the industry, including rising input costs, disease outbreaks, security concerns, and the destructive effects of the Akosombo Dam spillage, which reportedly caused significant losses and forced some operators to suspend their activities.

Commending the farmers for their resilience and innovative approaches despite these setbacks, Minister Arthur encouraged them to deepen collaboration with the Ministry to scale up production, improve sector resilience, and boost recovery efforts.

Mr. Lukutor and Ms. Dzeklo also called for special interventions, including a dedicated compensation package for farmers affected by the dam spillage, to sustain jobs and support economic recovery in the district. They acknowledged the farmers’ critical role in employment creation and local economic development, emphasizing that aquaculture remains a vital livelihood source for many households in the region.

In response,the  Minister  assured stakeholders that their concerns had been noted and pledged to advocate for appropriate compensation and policy support to help affected farmers recover and reposition the aquaculture sector for sustainable growth.
