The General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) has called for the establishment of a Ghana Agricultural Services (GAS) body to spearhead reforms and oversee the implementation of national policies aimed at transforming the country’s agricultural sector.
Dr. Pascal Kaba, Deputy Secretary of GAWU, emphasized the importance of such an initiative, highlighting the need for a centralized agency to ensure the effective execution of policies designed to modernize and boost productivity within the agricultural industry.
“The establishment of Ghana Agricultural Services will provide a strategic framework for driving reforms and coordinating efforts across the sector. This is essential to achieving the transformative goals outlined in national agricultural policies,” Dr. Kaba stated.
GAWU’s proposal addresses key challenges in the sector, including inefficiencies in policy implementation, low productivity, and the need for better support systems for farmers and other stakeholders. The union believes that a dedicated body like GAS could enhance coordination, streamline operations, and drive innovation to unlock the sector’s full potential.
Dr. Kaba further noted that the creation of such a service would align with global best practices, where specialized agricultural bodies play a pivotal role in advancing food security, sustainable farming practices, and economic growth.
