The North West Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) in South Africa has officially rolled out its innovative Farmers Market Day initiative, a groundbreaking program designed to foster sustainable agriculture, support small-scale farmers, and stimulate local economies across the province.
The initiative seeks to bridge the gap between farmers and consumers by creating direct access to a vibrant marketplace for fresh, locally grown products. By removing intermediaries, Farmers Market Day ensures fair compensation for producers, while offering consumers affordable, high-quality agricultural goods. This approach not only supports food security but also strengthens economic growth within local communities.
MEC Madoda Sambatha has lauded the initiative as a transformative step towards revitalizing rural economies and reshaping the province’s agricultural sector.
“Through this initiative, we are not only championing sustainability but also providing emerging farmers with crucial access to markets and the necessary support to succeed. We encourage local communities, residents, and businesses to participate by visiting the markets and purchasing locally grown produce, contributing to the advancement of the North West’s agricultural sector,” said MEC Sambatha.
The Farmers Market Day will be hosted across several municipalities, with a diverse range of agricultural products on offer, including fresh produce, livestock, and processed goods. The inaugural event was successfully held in the Matlosana Local Municipality, followed by another in the Greater Taung Local Municipality. The next Farmers Market Day is scheduled for March 7, 2025, in the Mamusa Local Municipality, with additional municipalities expected to follow.
During these market events, DARD will provide technical support to producers and small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs), offering workshops on food safety, quality standards, and business management to enhance productivity and help meet consumer needs.
At the recent Farmers Market Day in Taung, poultry farmer Ms. Tshegofatso Tekolo from Extension 7 in Taung expressed her appreciation for the initiative.
“The Farmers Market is a vital step forward in connecting smallholder farmers and business owners with the broader community,” said Ms. Tekolo.
This initiative is in line with DARD’s ongoing commitment to supporting smallholder farmers, improving food security, and providing greater economic opportunities for rural residents. By establishing dedicated spaces for farmers and SMMEs, DARD aims to break down market access barriers, stimulate local trade, and empower communities to thrive sustainably and economically.
