Our Food Import Bill Continues to Soar Despite our Resources – Mahama

His excellency President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that Ghana’s food import bill continues to soar despite the country’s endowment in rich resources.

Delivering the State of the Nation’s Address in Parliament, the president express worry over the high cost and heavily dependence of food importation.

According to him, Ghana’s food importation bill has continuously increased reaching alarming levels of over US$2 billion annually despite the country’s fertile lands, abundant water, and human resources.

“Mr Speaker, Ghana has fertile lands, abundant water, and human resources. Yet, we face a paradox. Our food import bill continues to soar, reaching alarming levels of over US$2 billion annually.”

The President emphasized that this remains a challenge influencing and driving rising food inflation which is burdening households and threatening livelihoods.

To address this, President Mahama assured that his government is implementing several well-considered policies to grow the agricultural sector, including agro-processing. “This will be backed by a reliable power supply, to meet our country’s needs while advancing exports to earn foreign exchange and strengthen our economy.”
