As Ghana grapples with a shortage of cattle, traders are increasingly turning to neighboring Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali to meet demand. Urgent calls have been made for government support to bolster local livestock farming, particularly cattle production, in order to reduce reliance on imports.
Michael Tungbani, Production Manager of the Kumasi Abattoir, highlighted the strain caused by the scarcity of cattle in the country. He emphasized that the abattoir is currently experiencing a shortage of cattle, especially in anticipation of the 2024 Eid Adha festivities, with expectations of approximately 5,000 livestock.
Attributing the shortfall to limited local production, Tungbani underscored the importance of investing in domestic cattle farming to mitigate the need for imports. He assured the public of the abattoir’s commitment to delivering efficient and hygienic services, ensuring that meat available in the market is safe for consumption.
Dismissing rumors of increased service charges, Tungbani clarified that the abattoir has no plans to raise fees ahead of the Eid Adah celebrations. He encouraged the public to utilize the abattoir’s services to guarantee the safety and hygiene of meat consumed.
