The Kpando Municipal Command of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has intercepted three trucks loaded with smuggled cocoa beans at Kpando Torkor in the Volta Region. The interception occurred between 0040 and 0400 hours on Friday, April 12. The registration numbers of the intercepted vehicles are GE 1782-U, AS 7907-22, and GT 5932-12.
Superintendent Michael Amoako-Atta, Head of Public Affairs at GIS, disclosed that the Officer in-Charge of the GIS in the Kpando Municipal Command, Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI) Peter Austin Hall, along with a team of officers, were deployed based on intelligence to Kpando Torkor. Upon arrival, they observed a boat suspected to be arriving from the Afram Plains, loaded with bags of cocoa beans.
The officers covertly monitored the offloading of cocoa beans into the three trucks parked near the landing site. The cocoa beans were intended to be smuggled through an unapproved route at Wli to Togo. Three suspects, Wahab Abdulai, Nicholas Agbesi, and Fodume, all aged 42, were apprehended in connection with the smuggling operation.
Subsequently, the suspects and the trucks were handed over to the Kpando Police for further investigation and legal action. Superintendent Amoako-Atta reiterated GIS’s commitment to border protection and the prevention of cross-border crimes. He commended border residents and the public for their continuous collaboration through information-sharing and encouraged citizens to report any suspicious activities to GIS and other security agencies as part of the “See Something, Say Something” campaign.
