Construction of the 24-Hour Economy Market at Kadjebi in the Oti Region has reached the foundation level, about a month after the contractor moved to site.
A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) to the project site on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, saw workers undertaking foundation works.
Mr Michael Amewuho, Foreman, said Memphis Metropolitan Limited, an Accra-based civil engineering and general building construction firm, was executing the project.
He said the contractor was committed to completing the project within schedule, barring any major challenges, particularly adverse weather conditions.
Mr Amewuho, however, declined to disclose the completion period, saying he would require permission from his superiors to provide that information.
The project forms part of the Government’s 24-Hour Economy Programme, which seeks to promote economic activities and create employment opportunities through investments in strategic infrastructure and businesses.
Mr Sefakor Attah, Kadjebi District Chairman of the Association of Small-Scale Industries (ASSI), described the location of the project as appropriate due to its accessibility and visibility.
He said the market’s proximity to the highway and the new lorry station would attract a steady flow of customers, helping traders to expand their businesses and providing farmers with a convenient outlet for their produce.
“The location is ideal because commercial activities thrive where there is constant movement of people. Traders, passengers and visitors will easily patronise the market, which will ultimately improve the local economy,” he said.
Mr Attah said the project could also facilitate the expansion of the Kadjebi Township towards the corridor and stimulate the establishment of businesses, including banks, fuel stations, restaurants, pharmacies and other essential services.
He expressed optimism that the market would create employment opportunities for the youth and increase revenue generation for the Kadjebi District Assembly.
Ms Peace Anyomi, a businesswoman, commended the authorities for selecting the site, describing it as a strategic decision that would benefit both traders and consumers.
She said the spacious environment would provide a more conducive setting for commercial activities.
Ms Anyomi appealed to the Government and the contractor to ensure the timely completion of the project to enable traders to begin operating from the facility.
Mr Samuel Kofi Manu, Assembly Member for the Kadjebi Central Electoral Area, also welcomed the project, saying it demonstrated the Assembly’s commitment to promoting economic development in the district.
He said the market would not only improve trading activities but also increase the value of surrounding lands and attract private investment to the area.
Mr Manu appealed to residents to support the project by cooperating with the contractor and safeguarding the facilities when completed.
Some residents urged the authorities to allocate adequate trading spaces to women, persons with disabilities and local farmers to promote inclusiveness and ensure that residents derived maximum benefit from the project.
They expressed the hope that, upon completion, the 24-Hour Economy Market would transform Kadjebi into a vibrant commercial centre and contribute to economic growth and job creation in the district.
The market is expected to provide modern infrastructure to support trading activities, improve the business environment, and enhance economic opportunities for traders and other small-scale businesses.
