Market women and traders at the Nana Bosoma Central Market in the Sunyani Municipality have called for their relocation, as the Sunyani Municipal Assembly begins the reconstruction of the facility, under the government’s 24-hour market project.
Checks showed that the Assembly had selected and was demolishing market sheds and structures to pave the way for the re-construction of the central market into a befitting standard.
During a visit to the central market on Wednesday, the anxious traders told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) market survey that they were worried because the assembly authorities had not informed them of any relocation plan. 
Wednesdays are major market days at the central market where traders from parts of the country visit to transact businesses.
The traders said it was unfortunate and disappointing that the city authorities had failed to engage them on the exercise and demolishing their properties.
“Our livelihoods largely depend on the market and we are presently uncertain about where to go and sell”, Madam Grace Osei, a yam seller stated.
She appealed to the Assembly to be patient with the traders and relocate them fearing the businesses of many of them could collapse and lose their livelihoods.
Mrs Joyce Akrasi, a store keeper, expressed worry that the traders were operating with loans and demolishing the market structures and sheds would worsen their situation.
She said it would be difficult for them to repay their loans if they were not given some time to trade at the central market.
Sister Stella Anima, a vegetable and fruits seller also noted that even relocating the traders was not good for now because of the rains, and appealed for government intervention.
Some of the traders and market women also called on the assembly to acquire a different site for the 24-hour market project, saying that the stores and structures at the central market were still in good shape.
Efforts to contact Mr Vicent Antwi Agyei, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive, were unsuccessful.
