The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) is rallying all stakeholders to preserve Ghana’s delicate land and water resources and uphold national food safety standards. The Authority stresses the importance of safeguarding the safety and quality of the country’s food sources through a collaborative effort to protect lands and water bodies, vital environments for producing high-quality food for the populace.
Madam Francisca Obeng, the Central Regional Head of FDA, highlighted the crucial role of food in Ghanaian culture, fostering unity and identity. She questioned the integrity of serving or selling food with harmful substances like artificial colors, dyes, or formalin, urging clean and safe food production and preparation to prevent adverse effects on people.
Madam Obeng spoke during a public awareness campaign on food safety in Cape Coast to mark this year’s World Food Safety Day under the theme “Food Safety: Preparing for the unexpected.” The event aimed to underscore the correlation between current food production practices and long-term well-being for individuals, animals, and the environment.
World Food Safety Day, observed annually, raises awareness about the critical need for food safety for a prosperous future. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes the interconnectedness of food safety, nutrition, and food security, with millions falling ill and thousands dying annually due to contaminated food.
Madam Obeng emphasized that food safety is essential for survival and requires a collaborative effort involving governments, food producers, business operators, and consumers. She highlighted the symbolic significance of food in Ghana’s cultural heritage, emphasizing that food can either nourish or pose risks to health.
