The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) have entered into a strategic agreement to bolster electricity supply capacity in the Ashanti Region.
The move aimed to meet the Region’s escalating demand for power.
Key decisions include plans to upgrade one of the existing 66MVA transformers with a new 145MVA power transformer between GRIDCo and ECG Bulk Supply Points.
This upgrade will significantly increase installed capacity to address peak load demands, particularly during the evening hours (7pm-11pm)
Previously, the 66MVA transformers at Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point (BSP) were often strained to their maximum capacity during peak periods.
By upgrading the 66MVA transformer, the total installed capacity will rise to 145MVA, enhancing supply reliability across the region and improve supply stability in the greater Kumasi metropolis.
Engineer Peter Kofi Fletcher addressing the media said this will go a long way in helping the current situation and urged the public, road and building contractors to inform ECG before commencing business as most of their cables have been implanted underground.
“We are upgrading a particular transformer from 66MVA to 145MVA. Basically, what this means is that ,we are increasing electricity capacity in Kumasi to meet the current demand and future demand . You realize that even in Kumasi, developed areas, some structures are even springing.
“Looking at the existing capacity we have it is really tight. So this work we are doing is to increase capacity in the system,” he said.
He assured customers of their commitment to improve service delivery. He also appealed to customers to pay their bills promptly to enable them do more repair works.
