Fish production in the Bono Region has increased marginally with the region producing 1,988.1 tons between January and March 2026, Madam Diana Obuobi Sakyibea, the Bono Regional Director of Fisheries has said.
The region produced 1,883.81 tons within the same period in 2025.
She explained that aquaculture contributed to about 61.9 tons with capture fisheries contributing 1,926.2 tons, saying that in 2025 aquaculture production was around 33.81 tons with capture fisheries producing 1,850 tons.
Fingerling production also reached 89,000 in the first quarter of 2026, compared to the 31,200 fingerlings produced in the previous year.
Comparatively, Mad Sakyibea said about 35,450 fingerlings were stocked in the first quarter of the year against 23,400 fingerlings last year.
She attributed the growth to intensified extension services by the Fisheries Commission (FC), saying that many fish farmers in the region required regular technical guidance to adopt best practices and thereby improve productivity.
Mad Sakyibea indicated that availability of feed, harvesting and scoop nets also boosted production.
More so, the commission organised training programmes for fish farmers, encouraging them to network in identifying and addressing common challenges, especially challenges in marketing.
She said networking remained essential in fish production and to motivate farmers to expand production and promote aquaculture development.
Mad Sakyibea mentioned the high cost of feed as a major concern, stressing that although feed was available, prices remained high and called on the government and development partners to support the establishment of feed processing plants in the country.
She said the regions required feed plants to enable the farmers to process locally sourced raw materials into fish feed to reduce production costs and generate additional revenue for both farmers and operators.
Mad Sakyibea also called for availability of soft loans for fish farmers and associations to support their economic activities and to improve productivity and urged the farmers to adopt innovative marketing strategies.
She said the fisheries sector was rapidly expanding and called for more personnel for the commission to strengthen extension services for improved production.
