The Fisheries Commission engaged semi-industrial fisheries operators at Tema Newtown on 24th August 2026 in the Greater Accra Region. The engagement focused on key issues concerning the Draft Fisheries and Aquaculture Regulations under the Fisheries and Aquaculture Act, 2025 (Act 1146).
The Executive Director of the Fisheries Commission, Professor Benjamin Betey Campion, led the discussion, supported by Richner Odonkor, Mrs. Abena Serwah Asante, and Ms. Matilda Ajakameh.
Key thematic areas discussed included:
- Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing
- Vessel Tracking System
- Fishing Areas
- Registration and Licensing of Semi-Industrial Vessels
- Insurance Policies for fishers
The meeting provided an important platform for stakeholders to deliberate on pressing issues, exchange ideas, and clarify bottlenecks within the inshore sector, with the ultimate goal of promoting sustainable fisheries management.

Operators also sought clarification on authorised fishing areas, approved gears, the definition of trawling and towing gears, and the use of the term “vessels” in relation to penalties.
The Executive Director encouraged operators to explore opportunities in improved fish handling, packaging, value addition and export markets, as well as alternative fuel options.
