Farmers in the Pru West and Atebubu-Amantin areas of the Bono East Region have received education on the importance of agricultural insurance as a tool to protect their investments and livelihoods against risks associated with farming.
The sensitization programme was organized by the Ghana Agricultural Insurance Pool (GAIP) in collaboration with AgroT Hub, as part of efforts to increase farmers’ awareness and understanding of agricultural insurance and encourage them to adopt risk-management measures.
The engagement brought together farmers and other stakeholders within the agricultural value chain, providing a platform for participants to learn about the benefits of insurance coverage for their farming activities.
Agricultural insurance is designed to provide financial protection to farmers against losses resulting from risks such as adverse weather conditions and other unforeseen events that can negatively affect agricultural production.
Speaking during the sensitization, representatives of GAIP and AgroT Hub encouraged farmers to view agricultural insurance as an important component of modern farming rather than an additional cost.
They explained that farmers who ensure their crops and other agricultural investments could be better positioned to recover from unexpected losses and continue their farming activities.
The facilitators also took participants through issues relating to the purpose of agricultural insurance, the risks covered, the importance of understanding insurance policies and the need for farmers to obtain adequate information before subscribing to insurance products.
The engagement further provided an opportunity for farmers to ask questions and seek clarification on issues concerning agricultural insurance and how it could support their farming businesses.
The organizer’s said increasing awareness at the community level was critical to improving the uptake of agricultural insurance, particularly among smallholder farmers whose livelihoods depend heavily on agriculture.
Farmers were therefore encouraged to engage insurance providers and relevant agricultural stakeholders to understand the available products, coverage conditions and procedures for making claims when the need arises.
The sensitization in Pru West and Atebubu-Amantin forms part of broader efforts to promote climate and agricultural risk management among farmers and strengthen the resilience of Ghana’s agricultural sector.
Participants expressed appreciation for the initiative and called for more education programmes to be organized in farming communities to deepen their understanding of agricultural insurance and other measures that can help protect their livelihoods.
