In a major step toward fostering entrepreneurship and self-reliance, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) , through the Joint Action on Jobs, Migration, and Development, has successfully trained and graduated 500 beneficiaries from a Short-Term Skills Training program.
The initiative, implemented in partnership with the European Union (EU), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development , and the Government of Ghana, was delivered at a cost of approximately 400,000 euros.
The three-month intensive program aimed to equip participants with practical, in-demand skills to enhance self-employment opportunities. Training sessions were held across five regions: Accra (150 beneficiaries), Ahafo (50 beneficiaries), Ashanti (150 beneficiaries), Bono (100 beneficiaries), and Bono East (50 beneficiaries).
Each graduate was awarded a certificate of completion and received a tailored equipment starter pack relevant to their chosen trade, including hairdressing, barbering, electrical works, and fashion design. These starter packs are expected to serve as a foundation for beneficiaries to launch their own businesses, thereby driving economic empowerment and local development.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony, Andreas Berding, Head of Programme,underscored the significance of the initiative in advancing economic independence and entrepreneurship.
“This program embodies our commitment to providing sustainable livelihoods and promoting entrepreneurship. By equipping trainees with the tools they need, we are fostering a culture of self-reliance and innovation.”
Beneficiaries shared their excitement and gratitude, highlighting the transformative impact of the training. Emmanuel Aryee, a graduate specializing in fashion design, expressed how the program has strengthened his skills and boosted his confidence.
“This training has helped upgrade my skills in sewing for ladies. I now have the confidence and tools to start my own business,” Aryee said.
The Short-Term Skills Training initiative forms part of a broader effort by the EU, GIZ, and its partners to support Ghanaian job seekers and returnees by providing access to vocational training, resources, and infrastructure improvements. This strategic investment in human capital is expected to contribute significantly to job creation and sustainable economic growth in Ghana.
