The Chief of Kudula in the Northern Region, Yong Naa Chimsi Fuseini, has commended the Boost to Bloom Project for bringing practical vegetable production training to young farmers and participants in the community.
The Chief expressed his happiness about the training and called for similar programs to be organized every year. According to him, continuous training will give farmers the opportunity to build on their knowledge, improve their farming practices and increase their yields.
“We are happy about this training because our farmers have gained knowledge that will help them improve their vegetable production. We wish this kind of training could happen every year so that our farmers can continue learning and improve their yields.” He stated.
He added that vegetable production remains an important activity for the community, providing farmers with food for their families as well as an opportunity to generate income.
The training brought together young farmers and other participants from Kudula, who were taken through practical lessons covering the key stages of vegetable production.
Participants learnt about nursery establishment and seedling production, gaining knowledge on how to raise healthy seedlings before moving them to the field. They were also introduced to land preparation and field establishment, helping them understand the importance of preparing suitable growing conditions for their crops.
The sessions continued with practical lessons on transplanting, appropriate fertilizer application and good agronomic practices for vegetable production. These lessons equipped participants with knowledge on how to properly manage their crops, support healthy growth and work towards better yields.
Participants also learnt about harvesting and post-harvest handling, with emphasis on proper handling of vegetables after harvest to help maintain quality and minimize losses.
Beyond production, the training highlighted the importance of vegetables in household diets, encouraging participants to see vegetables not only as a source of income but also as an important part of healthy and nutritious meals.
For the young farmers, the training provided practical knowledge they can take back to their farms and apply in their daily activities. The expectation is that these lessons will translate into improved farming practices, increased production and better livelihoods.
The Boost to Bloom Project forms part of AGRA’s long-term outcome, supporting efforts to strengthen vegetable production, build the capacity of farmers and create job opportunities for young people within the agricultural sector.
