The Ashanti Regional Chief Butcher, Ibrahim Wahab Tikuma, is urging the government to upgrade the Kumasi Abattoir to international standards to boost Ghana’s economy, create jobs, and support the 24-hour economy initiative.
Established in 1957 by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, the abattoir has seen minimal improvements, despite its long-standing viability. Chief Tikuma emphasized that modernization is essential to maximize its potential and position Ghana’s meat industry for global competitiveness.
He revealed that Ghana earned $6 million from cattle intestines in 2023/2024 but highlighted the vast disparity with Australia, which generates $50 billion annually through prioritizing its meat sector. He believes a modernized abattoir could significantly narrow this gap.
he also called for government interventions to reduce the financial strain on butchers, including negotiating with Burkina Faso and Mali for lower cattle prices and providing subsidies on imports.
A modernized Kumasi Abattoir, he argued, would enhance job creation, strengthen international trade, and become a critical driver of Ghana’s economic growth.
