The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet), in partnership with Ministry of Communication and Digitalisation, has launched Green Climate Clubs in Senior High Schools at the Northern Region pursuant to achieving Sustainable Development Goals-13 and empowering a climate-smart generation.
Powered by the Ghana Agricultural Sector Investment Program (GASIP), the symposium was held at Tamale to create awareness in climate change, adaptation and mitigation and to equip the students on climate sustainability and advancing environmental development.
At the symposium, The Acting Director-General, Mr. Asuman Eric highlighted that climate change has resulted to the knockouts of national economies and generally affected the standards of living in the country hence the need for a strategy to address the global canker and to ensure that the next generations to come can survive and ‘thrive on the planet’.
He said ‘Addressing these issues, we have become aware that environment and climate change education is lacking, especially among the youth. However, there is an opportunity to create awareness among students and young people through the introduction of climate change clubs in SHSs’.
Full Fledged Support For GMet
While the Ministry of Communication and Digitalization pledged the full support of the government for the GMet to continue its operations to curb the negative impact of Climate change in the country, the Climate Change Adaptation Manager, Dr. Edmund Kyei Akoto-Danso, at the Ghana Agricultural Sector Investment Promotion (GASIP) also assured in a speech that the government will continually show its support toward GMet in developing climate change strategies to reduce its effects.
The Deputy Minister of Ministry of Communication and Digitalization, Madam Ama Pomaa Boateng, encouraged that the ministry looks forward to support its affiliates to raise environmental-conscious young leaders to address climate change effects and help students to design and establish climate-smart actions like tree planting and creating awareness while developing problem-solving solutions to mitigate its negative effects.
The Northern Regional Minister, Alhaji Shani Shaibu Alhassan also called on the support of all and sundry, teachers and institutions and civillians to drive speedly, the advocacy of climate change actions in communities.
