Olam Agri Ghana has donated GH¢100,000 to support the organisation of the 42nd National Farmers’ Day celebration scheduled for December 4, 2026, in Sunyani in the Bono Region.
Receiving the donation, Dr Eric Opoku, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, expressed appreciation to the company, saying contributions from corporate organisations would be used to support the celebration and reward deserving farmers.
He said the 2026 celebration was particularly important given the challenges farmers had faced in recent years.
Dr Opoku said the government, through the Feed Ghana Programme, had introduced measures to increase domestic agricultural production and strengthen food security.
He said the government was also enhancing reward packages for outstanding farmers to motivate them and encourage more people, particularly the youth, to consider agriculture as a viable business.
Dr Opoku said the 2026 Overall National Best Farmer would receive GH¢1.2 million, a new pickup vehicle, a tractor with accessories and assorted agricultural inputs.
The winner and spouse would also benefit from a seven-day agricultural study and leisure trip to Italy, sponsored by a private company.
Mr Baibhav Biswas, the Country Head of Olam Agri Ghana, said the company considered it a privilege to support the celebration and recognised farmers as key contributors to Ghana’s food security and economic development.
He said Olam Agri had operated in Ghana for about 35 years and worked closely with farmers in sectors including cocoa, cashew and rice.
The company also has interests in agro-processing, including flour milling, pasta, tomato paste and biscuit production, as well as rice sourcing, distribution and importation, he added.
The National Farmers’ Day celebration was instituted in 1985, with the first celebration held at Osino in the Eastern Region. It was established to recognise and reward farmers and fishers for their contribution to food production, food security and the national economy.
The first Friday of December is observed as Farmers’ Day, with national, regional and district-level activities used to honour outstanding farmers and other actors in the agricultural sector.
The 42nd national celebration will be held in Sunyani, Bono Region, on December 4, 2026.
