The Traders Advocacy Group Ghana (TAGG) has warned that continued increases in charges at Ghana’s ports could lead to higher prices of imported goods.
The group says traders and importers cannot continue absorbing what it considers excessive charges, arguing that additional costs at the ports are eventually passed on to consumers.
Speaking at a press conference here in Accra today, the 1st of September, 2026, TAGG General Secretary Nana Opoku said the group was particularly concerned about an administrative charge which, according to TAGG, was agreed at 550 cedis but was later increased to 720 cedis.
“Following those engagements, we understand that 550 cedis was the amount agreed upon. Yet, to our surprise, that figure was subsequently increased to 720 cedis” he said.
Opoku questioned the basis for the increase and called on the relevant authorities to explain the decision.
“Who authorised this increase? Why was it necessary? And in whose interest are these decisions being made?” said Opoku.
Impact on consumers
TAGG says the dispute over port charges is not only a matter for traders and importers, but could have a direct impact on consumers. Opoku said businesses would eventually have to reflect additional operating costs in the prices of their goods.
“Traders cannot absorb unlimited additional cost. If these charges remain, they will inevitably affect the prices of import of goods and that is a basic economics” he said.
He urged consumers to look beyond the prices they see in shops and consider the various costs imposed along the importation process.
“When prices rise, Ghanaians must ask not only what the trader is charging but also what charges were imposed at the port, what administrative fees are being collected, and what shipping related levies are being applied.”
TAGG said it is not opposed to legitimate import duties or lawful taxes owed to the state, but wants what it considers excessive or unjustified charges reviewed.
Call for government intervention
The group is calling on the President, the Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Shippers Authority to intervene and review the charges. It is also urging shipping lines to comply with Ghanaian laws, regulations and lawful directives.
Opoku added that traders were tired of repeated meetings without what they consider meaningful action.
“We are tired of endless meetings, we are tired of promises, we are tired of being told to wait. We want action.”
Commercial transport concerns
TAGG also raised concerns about the shortage of commercial vehicles, particularly during peak hours when commuters struggle to find transport home.
The group says it has proposed a 50 percent reduction in import duties on commercial vehicles for a specified period to encourage private investment and increase the number of commercial vehicles.
Opoku said the proposal had been forwarded to the Ministry of Transport but that meaningful action was still outstanding.
“We do not merely complain; we propose a solution.”
TAGG said it wants the government to act to reduce the cost of doing business and prevent further pressure on consumers.
