The Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman, has commended the Minister for Food and Agriculture, Honourable Eric Opoku, and his team for their dedication and effective implementation of government programmes and interventions aimed at strengthening Ghana’s agricultural sector.
The commendation came during a working visit to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture, where the Vice President interacted with Directors and staff for insight into the Ministry’s efforts to boost food production and transform the sector.
“Food, we know, is the first basic necessity of life. It is food before clothing and shelter,” the Vice President emphasized, encouraging all stakeholders in the agricultural sector to continue working diligently to ensure sustainable food security for the nation.
Prof. Opoku-Agyeman also expressed satisfaction with the Ministry’s interventions aimed at supporting women in agriculture, commending women farmers for taking advantage of these opportunities and contributing significantly to national food production.
She further urged churches, security agencies, and individuals to venture into the Institutional Farming initiative under the Feed Ghana Programme as an avenue to reduce the country’s food imports.
The Vice President also underscored the importance of strengthening collaboration with research institutions such as the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) to drive innovation, improve productivity, and support sustainable agricultural development.
She assured the Ministry of government’s continued support in executing its mandate to transform agriculture to ensure food security for all Ghanaians.
The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Honourable Eric Opoku, used the platform to outline several key programmes and interventions imbedded in the Feed Ghana Programme being implemented by the Ministry to increase agricultural productivity, strengthen value chains, create jobs, reduced imports and improve farmers’ livelihoods.
He noted that the Ministry’s efforts have contributed to a significant reduction in food inflation from 61% in 2023 to 3.8% in 2026, the lowest recorded in Ghana’s history.
The Minister also highlighted Nkoko Nketenkete initiatives under the Feed Ghana Programme as a poultry drive aimed at boosting local food production, trigger processing and reducing Ghana’s dependence on food imports.
