The Importers and Exporters Association of Ghana (IEAG) has expressed support for the Ghana Standards Authority’s (GSA) planned Pre-Shipment Inspection and Vehicle Age Verification (PVoC) programme, for imported used vehicles.
The programme, scheduled to take effect from October 1, is intended to prevent the importation of substandard and unsafe vehicles and improve compliance with Ghana’s safety and environmental requirements.
Mr Samson Asaki Awingobit, the Executive Secretary of the IEAG at a press conference, said the association believed the new system would also improve the traceability of imported vehicles and help address concerns over stolen and accident-damaged vehicles.
Mr Awingobit said the association welcomed the GSA’s engagement with industry stakeholders ahead of the implementation of the programme.
“The IEAG fully supports the Ghana Standards Authority’s planned implementation of the Pre-Shipment Inspection and Vehicle Age Verification (PVoC) programme,” he said.
He urged importers and other members of the trading community to embrace the new system, saying it would ultimately contribute to a safer and more trader-friendly vehicle importation environment.
He explained that the programme could help close loopholes associated with the importation and purchase of vehicles that did not meet required safety and environmental standards.
The IEAG said the GSA’s ongoing consultations with industry players were an important step towards ensuring a smooth implementation of the programme.
It therefore encouraged its members to familiarise themselves with the new requirements and comply with the system when it takes effect.
The Association said effective implementation of the PVoC programme would benefit both traders and consumers by promoting greater transparency and confidence in the used-vehicle market.
