About one thousand, five hundred small scale female farmers are yet to benefit free organic fertilizers worth 50,000 Ghana cedis from HJA Africa.
This was revealed on Joy Business by Henry Abraham, the Chief Executive Officer of HJA Africa, as he mentioned that the organic fertilizer manufacturing company will be donating as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility to ensure that the farm produce of smallholder farmers are improved and also ensure that business strategies are put in place for smooth running of their farms.
“The best way to help the millions of smallholder farmers who struggle with low yields leading to low profits is to offer sustainable business models that enable them to run their farm profitability, without having to find large sums upfront to invest in inputs, which will often be out of reach.
He subsequently said that the company and its partners including the Peasant Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG), the African Fertilizer and Agribusiness Partnership (AFAP) and CEO of Okata Farms, Mrs. Mabel Akoto Kwudzo will work together so they can offer free Organic Farming Aid (OFA) fertilizers from their CSR programme to chosen smallholder female farmers so they can benefit from the OFA project for themselves.
“Our shared aim is both to provide immediate help and to open up a route to much more profitable long-term farming for many of these farmers. It is a huge privilege to be able to offer such good news to all Ghanaian farmers today, particularly in these difficult times,” he said.
However, Edward Kareweh, an agriculturist, has given thumbs up for the initiative and beseeched other agricultural sectors to jump on the train to develop locally produced methods to deal with challenges.
“These are people that have been working in the local environment and they are really in appreciation of the challenges that farmers face and have worked with farmers to develop a solution to address their challenges. These are enduring solutions. It is critical that we develop home grown solutions which target our specific challenges, rather than always relying on foreign solutions that are generic and sometimes not very helpful when we apply them here,”
Mabel Akoto Kwudzo confirmed that the OFA fertilizer increased her farm yields after applying it as her farm produce were attacked by pests and fungus when she did not apply anything at all.
