The second day of the high-level Ghana visit by former Nebraska State Senators Ken Schilz and Justin Wayne saw the delegation engage key stakeholders across Ghana’s poultry, livestock, and agribusiness sectors as discussions intensify on plans to establish a modern livestock processing facility in the country under the 10-year Ghana–Nebraska Agricultural Cooperation Agreement.
On Monday, the delegation visited the Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association (GAPFA), and the Rosswood Company Limited in Accra to hold strategic consultations with industry players whose operations are critical to the success of Ghana’s poultry industry and value-addition focused agribusinesses.
At the Greater Accra Poultry Farmers Association, discussions centered on the challenges and opportunities within Ghana’s poultry industry, including feed costs, production efficiency, market competitiveness, value addition, and sustainable growth. The engagement highlighted the pivotal role poultry farmers play in ensuring national food security and underscored the importance of integrating poultry producers into the broader vision of modernizing Ghana’s livestock sector through the Ghana–Nebraska partnership.
A key part of the discussion was how Ghana can learn from Nebraska’s experience in poultry production. Areas such as better farm management, farmer training, disease control and stronger links between farmers, processors and markets were identified as important areas for learning and possible adaptation.
Nebraska’s experience shows the importance of building strong systems around poultry production, from keeping farms healthy and well-managed to supporting farmers with the right knowledge and connecting production to processing and markets.
The CEO for the association, Ali Muhammed, emphasized that, for Ghana, adapting some of these approaches to local conditions could help farmers improve production, reduce losses and build more profitable poultry businesses. It could also create opportunities for investment, job creation and stronger local production.
The delegation also visited Rosswood Company Limited, a key player in Ghana’s agribusiness and value added product supply chain ecosystem. Discussions focused on opportunities for private sector participation, investment partnerships, technology transfer, and the development of efficient systems that can support, production, processing, and distribution. The engagement reinforced the importance of leveraging private sector expertise and innovation to drive agricultural transformation and industrial growth.
The Founder and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Rosswood Company Limited, Priscilla Asante highlighted that, the company is one that is a fast rising and committed to producing high-quality, nutritious cashew and yoghurt products through ethical practices, innovation, and consistency. “We exist to nourish our customers, support our communities, and protect our environment, creating value across every step of our journey together.”
She stated that the organization remains open to collaborations that helps in expanding its reach and creating opportunities through, technology, technical support and expansion, and investments that would add more value and broaden its capacity to execute its vision and mission.
The stakeholder engagements form part of broader consultations being undertaken by the Nebraska delegation to ensure that the proposed livestock processing plant aligns with the needs of industry actors and contributes meaningfully to Ghana’s agricultural development agenda.
The proposed processing facility is expected to serve as a catalyst for growth within the livestock sector by enhancing value addition, reducing post-harvest losses, improving meat quality and safety standards, creating employment opportunities, and increasing the competitiveness of locally produced livestock products.
The visits further demonstrate the practical implementation of the historic 10-year Ghana–Nebraska Agricultural Cooperation Agreement, which seeks to strengthen collaboration in livestock development, agribusiness investment, food security, technology transfer, and capacity building. Through sustained engagement with industry stakeholders, both Ghana and Nebraska continue to lay the foundation for a resilient, modern, and commercially viable livestock sector capable of driving economic growth and improving livelihoods across the agricultural value chain.
