The Vegetable Producers and Exporters Association of Ghana (VEPEAG) has reaffirmed its commitment to boosting local tomato production following a deadly terrorist attack on Ghanaian traders in northern Burkina Faso, which claimed seven lives.
The association said the move aims to reduce the risks and challenges faced by traders travelling to neighbouring countries to source tomatoes for Ghana’s domestic market. By strengthening local production, VEPEAG hopes to ensure a safer and more reliable supply chain.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, February 17, and signed by Dr Felix Kamassah, VEPEAG’s president, the association urged the government to upgrade and expand irrigation facilities nationwide.
Such improvements, they said, are essential for achieving consistent and surplus tomato production capable of meeting the country’s demand.
“We strongly believe that the resources and expertise required for the production of high-quality tomatoes are found here in Ghana,” the statement added.
