300 female farmers in Gumo, located in the Kumbungu District of the Northern Region, have recently undergone intensive training in mushroom farming. This initiative aims not only to boost their economic prospects but also to address the issue of rural-urban migration by creating viable livelihood opportunities in their communities.

The training program, part of the DeliMush project under the auspices of the Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC) Agritech Business Challenge in the Northern region, is designed to equip these women with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in mushroom cultivation. By tapping into the potential of mushrooms as innovative ready-to-eat snacks and meals, the project aims to bring about positive changes in the local community.

One of the key objectives of the initiative is to empower local farmers, particularly women, to minimize post-harvest losses and cater to the increasing demand for healthier food choices. Madam Aisha Abdullah, the Business Lead of the DeliMush Project, emphasized the rigorous market research and compelling pitches that led to the inception of the training program. She highlighted the importance of imparting agricultural literacy, especially among the youth in rural areas like the Kumbungu District.

According to Madam Abdullah, this empowerment initiative will not only make women and youth financially independent but also contribute to supporting education and businesses, thereby mitigating the rising unemployment rate in the region. She expressed the organization’s commitment to excellence by transforming mushrooms into innovative food products, not just as a business venture but also as a catalyst for positive societal change.

DeliMush has already made significant strides by partnering with over 100 retailers to promote mushroom consumption in northern Ghana. Additionally, a Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with the Rising Farmers Organization, demonstrating a commitment to sustainable agriculture and community development.

Mr. Abubakar Yakubu, the Marketing Officer of DeliMush, praised the KIC Agritech Challenge for its role in promoting innovative agritech ventures and fostering collaboration to achieve tangible socio-economic impacts. He noted the increasing demand for healthier food options in the region and highlighted the need for effective marketing strategies to promote nutritional foods that are currently underrepresented in the market.
