Farmers in the Oti Region of Ghana, are facing significant challenges due to the poor state of the road network in the area. The bad roads are making it difficult for farmers to transport their crops to the market and also posing a risk to their safety.
Samuel Agya, a young cocoa farmer in the area, expressed his concern about the impact of the bad roads on their farming activities. He cited numerous accidents that have occurred in the region, resulting in fatalities, due to the poor condition of the roads.
Furthermore, Samuel lamented the lack of adequate healthcare facilities in the region, particularly in the Oti Regional capital, Dambai. He noted that the town only has clinics instead of hospitals, which are not enough to meet the healthcare needs of the local population.
he also criticized the government’s Agenda 111 policy, which was introduced to improve the country’s healthcare infrastructure, but has not yield any results in the Oti Region.
Sulemana Mumuni, the Oti Regional organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), echoed concerns about the state of the roads in the region. He highlighted the Dambai-Nkwanta road, Nkwanta-Kpassa road, and the cocoa roads as some of the roads that were awarded since former president John Dramani Mahama’s time, but remain incomplete.
He also also noted that the lack of proper roads discourages young people from going into farming, as it is difficult to transport farm produce to the market during the rainy season.
The farmers in the Oti Region are calling on the government to prioritize the construction of good roads and healthcare facilities in the area to improve their standard of living and make their farming activities more productive.
