The Deputy Minister for Food and Agriculture, Hon. John Setor Dumelo, has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to revitalizing Ghana’s poultry sector through targeted policies and strategic interventions.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry, at the 5th Ghana Poultry Day celebration, Organized by Agrihouse Foundation, the Deputy Agric Minister emphasized that under the leadership of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the government views the poultry industry as a vital pillar of Ghana’s broader agricultural transformation agenda.
“Our journey toward agricultural transformation must include deliberate and sustained investment in the poultry value chain,” he said. “From hatcheries and feed production to processing and distribution, this sector holds immense potential for industrial growth, youth empowerment, and food self-sufficiency.”
Hon. Dumelo spotlighted two key government initiatives aimed at boosting poultry production nationwide:
- The Feed Ghana Programme, which supports the local cultivation of critical feed inputs such as maize and soybeans.
- The Nkoko Nkitikiti Initiative, a focused program providing improved chicks, vaccines, and technical training to small and medium-scale poultry farmers.
“These efforts are already reducing mortality rates, improving productivity, and strengthening local production nationwide,” he noted.
Praise for Agrihouse Foundation’s Role in Poultry Development
The Deputy Minister also gave special commendation to Agrihouse Foundation for their continued dedication to Ghana’s agricultural development, especially in promoting poultry farming. He acknowledged the Foundation’s role in creating practical platforms that empower smallholder farmers, youth, women, and agri-entrepreneurs.
“Agrihouse Foundation has been a vital partner, creating platforms that support smallholder farmers, youth, women, and agribusiness entrepreneurs. Today’s event, with its exciting cooking competition and the free distribution of over 5,000-day-old chicks and grilled poultry, shows how agriculture can be innovative and nationally celebrated,” he stated.
He assured the public of the Ministry’s resolve to strengthen its collaboration with Agrihouse Foundation, particularly in supporting sustainable poultry production and promotion across the country.
A Call for Stakeholder Support
Hon. Dumelo used the platform to rally stakeholders across the value chain from farmers and private investors to researchers, development partners, and consumers to prioritize and support the local poultry industry.
“Let us consume what we produce, support local hatcheries and processors, and invest in systems that help our poultry sector thrive,” he urged. “Together, we can build a self-sufficient and competitive poultry industry that delivers jobs, drives agri-tourism, and secures food for all Ghanaians.”
