The Ghana Enterprises Agency (GEA) has allocated GH¢5 million to bolster the regulatory efforts of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) in the food and pharmaceutical sectors. This financial injection is aimed at streamlining and enhancing the licensing process for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Alongside the funding, the GEA has provided the FDA with essential equipment including a vehicle, projectors, and printers to further facilitate its operations.
This initiative, conducted in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation, underscores a joint commitment to strengthening oversight and regulation within food and drug-related industries, with a primary focus on consumer safety and product quality.
During a brief ceremony held in Accra to mark the presentation, CEO of the GEA, Kosi Yankey-Ayeh, emphasized the agency’s dedication to creating an enabling environment for businesses while upholding rigorous regulatory standards. She highlighted the pivotal role of the FDA in safeguarding public health and fostering industry development, stressing that the grant aims to empower the FDA in maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficacy.
“The longstanding partnership between the Ghana Enterprises Agency and the Food and Drugs Authority underscores the importance of supporting the authority and accrediting MSMEs through initiatives like the Mastercard Foundation’s Business in a Box Project,” Mrs. Yankey-Ayeh remarked.
She further underscored the significance of the collaboration between the GEA and the Mastercard Foundation’s Business In a Box Project in strengthening the FDA’s capacity. By providing resources and support, the goal is to empower MSMEs and ensure the quality and safety of their products in the market.
Delese Mimi Darko, Chief Executive of the FDA, expressed appreciation for the generous grant from the GEA, noting its substantial impact on the FDA’s regulatory objectives. She emphasized that the funding will enhance the authority’s capacity to oversee and regulate MSMEs in the food and pharmaceutical sectors effectively, ultimately benefiting both businesses and consumers alike.
