Alhaji Yussif Fuseini Amuda, Tamale Metropolitan Director of Agriculture in-charge of Crops has called on households across the country to cultivate food crops in their backyards to improve food security and reduce dependence on external food supplies.
He said every Ghanaian home should ensure that at least one ingredient used in preparing meals came from their backyard production stressing that such an approach would contribute significantly to household food security.
He said, “At least one ingredient in the food you eat, whether lunch or dinner, should come from your backyard. It could be tomatoes, peppers, or any vegetable. It does not take much to grow them. You can even use containers or gallons filled with soil to cultivate food for your family.”
Alhaji Amuda said this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of a town hall meeting on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) localisation and stakeholder engagement in Tamale.
He emphasised that agriculture remained the foundation of human existence and national development, saying no country had developed without prioritising agriculture.
He said, “If you look at how humanity started, there were no Hospitals, no schools and many of the institutions we have today did not exist, but humanity has never lived without agriculture. To develop as a nation, we must start with agriculture.”
He said among the SDGs, the goal of ending hunger remained central because food security influenced every aspect of human life.
Alhaji Amuda urged Ghanaians to change their attitude towards agriculture and make use of available resources to produce food at household and community levels.
He also called for renewed commitment from government, institutions, and households to promote agriculture as a pathway to achieving food security, economic growth, and sustainable development.
