The Volta Lake and its environs will be developed into a key economic and environmental asset under a new growth programme, Finance Minister Mr Cassiel Ato Forson has announced.
He said the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme is anchored on the Volta Economic Corridor (VEC), a revival and expansion of Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s original Volta Project vision, reimagined to meet contemporary economic demands and regional prospects.
Mr Forson made this known on Thursday during the presentation of the 2025 Mid-Year Budget Review in Parliament.
He said the VEC would be rolled out through pillars of the development programme.
“Grow24 will irrigate over 2 million hectares of farmland for year-round farming instead of the traditional seasonal farming.
“Make24 will establish agro-industrial parks for textiles, pharmaceuticals, and food processing.
“Show24 will develop tourism clusters and hospitality hubs along the lake.
Connect24 will turn the lake into a major inland transport route, cutting haulage costs and linking northern, southern, eastern, and western Ghana,” he said.
President Mahama launched the 24-Hour Economy and Accelerated Export Development Programme on July 2, 2025, to stimulate production, modernise the economy, and create sustainable employment.
To support the initiative, Dr Forson said targeted incentives for the VEC would be outlined in the 2026 budget.
“These measures will be carefully designed to attract private capital, drive enterprise growth, and create decent, well-paying jobs.
The government will only facilitate, and not dominate, this ambitious new growth pole,” he said.
