Hon. Emelia Arthur, Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, joined the Ghana National Aquaculture Association on Thursday, August 28, 2025, for the launch of “Tilapia and Catfish Friday” at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
The initiative is designed to promote local fish consumption, strengthen Ghana’s aquaculture industry, and contribute to national development under the government’s Feed Ghana Agenda. It focuses on boosting local production, reducing reliance on imports, creating sustainable jobs, and ensuring food security.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Emelia Arthur applauded the innovation behind value-added products such as fish sausages, crackers, powder, and smoked tilapia and catfish. She emphasized that such products expand consumer choice, extend shelf life, improve branding, and open new market opportunities for fish farmers.
The initiative also prioritizes:
Expanding hatcheries for high-quality fingerlings
Ensuring affordable and nutritious fish feed
Improving cold chain and market infrastructure
Strengthening research and innovation with academia and industry
Enforcing biosecurity and disease control on farms
Upholding food safety and environmental sustainability
The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting aquaculture as a vital sector that creates jobs for women and youth while improving nutrition across Ghana.
